Thump, Grunt, Repeat: What Your Rabbit Is Saying on Cleaning Day

Cleaning day, and your rabbit stamps a back foot hard enough to rattle the hutch, then grunts at you like a tiny furious engine. It feels personal. It mostly isn't. ๐Ÿ‡

Two different messages are arriving at once. A thump is an alarm signal: in a warren it sends a shockwave through the burrow meaning danger, pay attention. A grunt is a warning aimed at you specifically: back off from my things.

Rabbits map their home by scent, and a thorough clean deletes that map. The tray smells of disinfectant instead of her. The blanket she spent ages bunching is flat again. Save a handful of her used dry bedding and put it back, and don't deep-clean everything on the same day.

Let her out into a run before you start, so she isn't trapped in a small space with large hands. Approach low and from the side rather than reaching over the top, which looks uncomfortably like a bird of prey. Put the tray and hidey box back in exactly the same spots.

One thing worth taking seriously: if the grumpiness is new, think body before attitude. Pain makes rabbits defensive, and they hide illness until they can't. Full guide below covers reading her body language, what to do if she nips, and the signs that mean a call to an exotics vet.
