Litter Training a Ferret (and Why Bathing Makes the Smell Worse)
The thing that surprises most new ferret owners: bathing your ferret usually makes the smell worse, not better. ๐
Washing strips the skin oils that cause the musk, and the skin simply makes more. Many owners find day two after a bath is the smelliest day of the month. Wash the bedding weekly instead โ hammocks and blankets hold far more odour than the ferret does.
Litter training genuinely works, though. Ferrets back into corners and lift their tail before they go, and they almost always need the tray within a minute of waking from a nap. Learn those two signals, use high-backed corner trays, and reward the instant they finish.
Start them in a small space with more trays than seems sensible, and let the ferret pick the corners. Expand one room at a time. Paper or wood pellets only โ clumping clay and cedar shavings aren't good for ferret noses.
