Why Is My Goldfish Gasping at the Surface?
Your goldfish hanging at the surface with its mouth working isn't asking for food. It's working hard to breathe, and by the time a fish does that, it's already out of easier options. ๐
Two causes account for most cases. Low oxygen, usually from warm water, a stalled filter or an overstocked tank. And ammonia or nitrite in the water, which burns gill tissue directly so the fish gasps even when oxygen is fine. A liquid test kit tells you which within ten minutes.
Three things to do in the next hour: check the filter outflow is actually rippling the surface, do a 30 to 50 per cent water change with dechlorinated, temperature-matched water, and stop feeding for a day or two. Never rinse filter media under the tap while you're troubleshooting, as chlorine kills the bacteria keeping ammonia down.
Worth knowing the difference, though. A goldfish that zooms to the top when you walk past, slurps, then swims away is just begging. Real gasping is sustained, the gills move fast, and the fish stays put.
The full guide covers the less obvious causes, what recovery should look like, and when it's time to call a vet who sees fish.
