Bald Patches and Broken Feathers: Why Budgies Pluck

Your budgie has a bald patch on his chest and the feathers around it look chewed off short. Before you buy another toy, here's the single most useful thing to check. ðŸŠķ

Look at where the feathers are missing. A budgie physically cannot reach his own head — so if the bare skin is on his crown, face or neck, he isn't plucking himself. That points to mites, a cage mate, or a feather disease, and it needs a vet who knows birds.

Also learn the difference between plucking and moulting. A moult is scruffy all over, with whole feathers dropped and waxy pin feathers pushing through. Plucking is patchy, often symmetrical, and the stubs look snapped.

Sudden plucking in a previously smooth bird is a health question first: itchy skin, gut parasites, liver trouble, pain, hormones, or years of a seed-only diet. Boredom and dry air make it worse, but they're rarely the whole story.

The full guide covers what to rule out, seven changes you can make this week, and why bitter sprays and a hastily bought second budgie often backfire.
